UfM Conference on Sustainable Development

A Ministerial Meeting of UfM on Sustainable Development was held in Paris on 25 June 2009. CETMO attended as the Secretariat of the GTMO 5+5. Before the conference was held, workshops had been held with the representatives of the four subsectors considered fundamental by the French-Egyptian co-presidents of the UfM: energy, water, transport and sustainable urban development.

The aim of the conference was to review the status of the projects, their management and financing. The aim was to coordinate financial institutions better to develop more capacity for performance and give a boost to technologies and innovative concepts that involve sustainable development.

One of the most important conclusions of the conference regarding the transport industry was the agreement to support coordination and take advantage of any synergies that could arise between the Euro-Med Transport Forum and the new initiative of UfM. The transport workshop concluded that both levels are useful, given that it understands that the Forum, as an institution for management of and reflection on Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, should contribute a joint vision of the strategy to be followed in the area of transport, and UfM (specifically the UfM Secretariat with headquarters in Barcelona ) should contribute a dynamic approach and the implementation of the projects considered priorities in the field of transport.

Also presented at the workshop was the list of 17 priority infrastructure projects drawn up by the Euro-Med Transport Forum.
