| Dear
friend,
I would like to thank you for your interest in CETMO and to take this opportunity to present the Center to you. CETMO -The Transport Study Center for the Western Mediterranean - was set up in 1985 following a decision made by the countries in the area at the suggestion of the Spanish Government and with the support of the regional Government of Catalonia, in accordance with the recommendations of the Conference of Transport Ministers of Mediterranean countries held in Salonika under the auspices of the United Nations. At its 40th plenary session in July 1988, the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations approved Resolution 1988/169, by which it «accords the Statute of United Nations Center to the Transport Study Center for the Western Mediterranean, located in Barcelona (Spain)». The prime objective of CETMO is the co-operation to improve transport conditions in countries in the south of Europe and in the Maghreb (Algeria, France, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia) through studies on transport infrastructure, flows, statistics and legislation in the Western Mediterranean and through the development of initiatives to facilitate transport. A further specific objective of CETMO is to study and circulate information on trends in logistics and technology that effect the strategic position and competitivity of the transport industry in countries in the area. Since the beginning of 1997, CETMO has also become the technical secretariat of the Transport Group of the Western Mediterranean (GTMO). The members of the GTMO are the transport ministers from the seven countries in the region. We are very pleased that since the center was set up, CETMO has consolidated its position as a means of co-operation in the Mediterranean and that it has achieved a high degree of international recognition. Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is any issue you would like to raise. Saki Aciman
